KhatOlympic swimmer Michael Phelps apologized last week for smoking marijuana at a party. But you won't hear men In Somaliland apologizing for their drug use. The men in that African country chew a green plant called khat almost every day. The plant has an effect similar to that of marijuana.
Chewing khat is part of the culture in Muslim Somaliland, though alcohol and hard drugs are frowned upon. Richard Lough bring us this story from the capital, Hargeisa, as part of our series on Somaliland. | Tunnels Under GazaIn the recent fighting in Gaza, Israel targeted supply tunnels on the border with Egypt. Some of the tunnels are used to smuggle weapons into Gaza. But others are used to bring in food and other essentials for the Palestinians living there.
Supplies have been scarce since Israel began a strict blockade in 2007, after Hamas took over the territory by force. Reporter Daniel Estrin visited the Egypt-Gaza border, where there are about 500 of these tunnels ... and he found tunnel operators busy at work. |
